PRP Q&A

Our physicians have performed over 3,000 PRP injections and have eleven years experience with the procedure.

What is PRP?

PRP consists of plasma with a higher concentration of platelets than the amount normally found in the bloodstream. PRP also contains one of the other healing components naturally found in your blood, white blood cells.

When you’re injured, or disease develops, platelets immediately go to the site of the problem and fill two essential jobs: They stop the bleeding and they activate the healing process.

Platelets contain proteins called growth factors. When these growth factors are released, they trigger the regeneration of tissues, regulate inflammation, and protect healthy cells. Platelets also release substances that build a collagen matrix, giving new tissues a foundation that supports their growth.

What health conditions are treated with PRP?

The team at Non-Surgical Orthopedic Center often recommends PRP injections for a soft tissue injury or degenerative joint disease. Treatment with PRP is especially beneficial for tissues like tendons, ligaments, and cartilage that heal slowly because their blood supply is low. The extra platelets from a PRP injection also accelerate healing if you have a severe injury or age has slowed down your healing response.

These are a few examples of the many orthopedic conditions that can be treated with PRP:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Meniscus tear
  • ACL injury
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Tendinitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ligament sprains or tears

PRP effectively improves healing in cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bones.

How is PRP produced?

PRP is a safe procedure because your treatment is made from a sample of your own blood. Your sample is placed in a centrifuge, which separates platelets and white blood cells from other components. When the centrifuge is finished, your doctor at Non-Surgical Orthopedic Center uses the platelets, white blood cells, and plasma for your PRP injection.

As soon as your PRP is ready, your Non-Surgical Orthopedic Center doctor uses ultrasound imaging to be sure your PRP is injected at the site of your damaged tissues. Most patients need about three injections to achieve optimal healing, although severe injuries may need more.
